Tweaks to your CV that you didn’t know about

Statistically, 60% of jobseekers do not receive feedback after sending in a job application. Sometimes there are objective reasons for this. For example, the lack of experience or the candidates’ lack of specialist education. But more often the problem is trivial – incorrectly designed CVs.

Unfortunately, for many, filling out the form is a mere formality. Poor structure, common phrases, a letter “in copy” for different jobs – all this is an indicator of lack of interest in obtaining a position. So what are the techniques that turn an ordinary text document into an effective employment tool?

The look of the resume

Recruiters in large companies receive up to 300 responses to job openings every day. Now imagine that it takes an average of only 5-10 seconds to review each application. The appearance of a document can attract attention and make you read the entire CV. You don’t have to paint it “in all the colours of the rainbow”.

But every profession has its peculiarities. And the differences between different areas of work do not allow you to make the only correct sample design resume.

You can of course use Word or GoogleDocs to create a standard CV. But a professional CV writing service will create a resume in a more attractive, modern and memorable style in a short period of time.

Structure of the resume

The structure of the document, namely the arrangement of blocks and sections, depends on the type of resume. There are three main ones – chronological, functional and combined.

A chronological resume emphasises the career history of the job seeker. It is ideal for professionals with a long career. The main block here is “Work experience”. It is centrally positioned and takes up as much space as possible.

The functional type is characterised by a focus on skills and achievements. These blocks are highlighted with font, colour, infographics. This type of CV is suitable for students and those who are just starting their career, i.e., do not have enough experience in their profession.

A third type is a combined resume that combines the advantages of the other two types. It provides a visual presentation of the candidate’s qualifications and accomplishments, as well as a vivid overview of the applicant’s work history.

Putting contacts on your resume

Most ready-made resume templates provide several contact options. Telephone, e-mail address, social media. It would seem, fill in the blank lines and that’s it! But even here, there are subtleties to consider if you want to get the job.

Add personal accounts in social networks only if you write about your professional activities there. Sometimes employers themselves ask for references to active social media in their responses. Before doing so, it is a good idea to clean up your feed or create a new profile and post a couple of posts there.

Accomplishments on your resume

A really strong CV is a success story. As you read it, the recruiter should understand how your education, career path, courses and personality are related to the position you’re applying for. The best way to show your relevance is to add achievements.

There are no one rules for how you should write and format your CV. Different factors need to be taken into account to create a truly effective CV.
