A Porsche driver cheated narrowly cheated death – when a fence post smashed through his seat just one inch from his head in a crash on country road.

The driver was a fraction from being impaled by the fence post when the luxury Boxster sports car lost control before hitting the fence nearly the wealthy village of Shirenewton, Monmouthshire.

Eyewitnesses at the scene saw a jagged fence post protruding through the windscreen, above the steering wheel and between the driver’s headrest.

The lucky driver escaped with minor cuts and bruises after the wooden panel missed him by an inch – and a passenger was unscathed.

The Boxster 987 – worth more than £50,000 – was severely damaged on the front drivers side and at the rear 

The crash happened on a country road on New Year’s Eve morning and no other vehicles were involved.

The well-heeled village was named in the top 50 poshest place to live in the UK. But the name of the Porsche driver has not been released.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said that the outcome could have been much worse.

He said: ‘The driver hit the kerb and hedgerow and the fence saved him from entering the adjoining field.

‘Upon hitting the fence, this then broke up causing it to go through the driver’s door window, through the driver’s headrest and push through the rear window.’

He said the car – a Boxster 987 worth more than £50,000 – was severely damaged on the front drivers side and at the rear.

‘Luckily at the time there was no other road user,’ he said.

‘The driver got away with what looked like a minor cut above his right ear and the passenger a minor cut by his left ear.

‘Both driver and passenger were very very lucky, the driver was less than one inch from being impaled through his head.’

Gwent Police confirmed they attended the scene and are investigating.
