Monroe biopic star Ana De Armas slams NC-17 rating from Netflix

Marilyn Monroe biopic star Ana De Armas slams NC-17 rating from Netflix and says other films on the streaming giant are ‘more explicit’…. so which movies COULD she be talking about?

  • The Motion Pictures Association announced that the upcoming Marylin Monroe biopic Blonde would be rated NC-17 for ‘some sexual content’
  • The film stars Cuban actress Ana de Armas as Monroe and is based on a Joyce Carol Oates novel
  • de Armas was quick to blast the rating, claiming that there are a number of shows ‘way more explicit’ than the biopic
  • Australian director Andrew Dominik did not hold back about the NC-17 rating, saying its ‘ a bunch of horses***

Marilyn Monroe biopic star Ana de Armas has slammed the rating for the upcoming release – believing that there are far more explicit shows on the streaming giant.

The actress said that she was ‘baffled’ by the NC-17 rating for the show, adding that there are a ‘number of shows or movies’ that are ‘way more explicit with a lot more sexual content. ‘

Director Andrew Dominik also lambasted the decision as political’ and ‘a bunch of horses***. Over the Motion Pictures Association of America rating.

Blonde author Joyce Carol Oates and Jamie Lee Curtis – whose father Tony Curtis co-starred with Monroe in Some Like It Hot – have both seen the film and fully approve.

Many have accused Netflix of trying to up the hype of the show before it is released on September 28 by giving it the adults only rating – hoping it will encourage viewers to tune in.

The streaming giant has filled our small screens with extremely erotic options – as well as the more gruesome and blood-filled horror choices.

Movies rated NC-17, 18+, are not necessarily always pornographic or obscene, but most cinemas won’t screen them since many newspapers and TV stations refuse to run ads for them.

Blonde is Netflix’s first NC-17 release, but the giant has previously launched several much raunchier series and movies – including 365 Days and Bonding.

Others, including Squid Game, have displayed exceptional amounts of gore and violence, while also carrying a milder TV-MA or R rating.

It is unclear exactly what scenes have given the new biopic it’s rating, but Dominik confirmed that there was a depiction of rape in the show.

DailyMail.com takes a look at the movies and TV shows that the Cuban actress could be referring to – with much racier scenes than Blonde…

356 Days

RATING – TV-MA

Polish film 365 days, tells the story of ‘fiery executive’ Laura Biel (Anna-Maria Sieklucka) who is kidnapped and imprisoned on a holiday to Sicily by mafia boss Massimo Torricelli (Michele Morrone).

365 features scenes of BDSM, voyeurism and multiple kinky sex scenes

The film, which arrived on the streaming service in the both the UK and the US in July 2020, features scenes of BDSM, voyeurism and multiple kinky sex scenes – and it has sparked furious controversy on both sides of the Atlantic.

In once scene, Laura is forced to watch mafia boss Massimo be pleasured by another woman while she remains chained to a wall, wearing nothing but a dressing gown.

Another scene sees the couple engage in some very steamy intercourse on the mafia boss’ yacht after Massimo saves Laura’s life.

Shocked viewers also watch Laura being tied to a chair on a private jet while Massimo teases her genitals.

Laura also teases Massimo by sexually arousing herself in the glass-pannelled shower while he lies in the nearby bed.

At another point the couple have sex against the window with the backdrop of Warsaw behind them.

Despite the criticism, the film had plenty of viewers feeling hot under the collar and it has been widely compared to E.L. James’s Fifty Shades franchise.

The bizarre series was originally released on the streaming site in August 2021, however a particularly ‘messed-up’ scene from the fourth episode has recently went viral.

The series itself, based on a 1996 book by the same name, tells the story of a Brazilian director called Lisa N. Nova, played by actress Rosa Salazar, who moves to Los Angeles in the hopes of leading her first major feature film.

After moving to Hollywood, Nova meets a producer-director by the name of Lou Burke – played by Eric Lange – who ultimately betrays her when she spurns his advances, prompting the budding director to enlist the help of a witch to curse him in revenge for his cruel behavior.

However Nova is forced to pay an incredibly strange price curse, which was performed by a witch named Boro: shortly after the spell was enacted, Nova begins to vomit up newborn kittens, which are then collected by a zombie who delivers them back to the witch.

While the plotline itself has left many viewers scratching their heads in confusion, it is a particularly peculiar and gruesome sex scene in the fourth episode of the series that has prompted a flurry of shocked and outraged reactions.

The scene, which takes place half-way through episode four, begins with Nova discovering a wound on her stomach. Initially horrified by the injury, she begins to touch it, which seemingly starts to turn her on.

Moments later she screams in pain as a newborn kitten is ‘born’ from the lesion, leaving the director writhing around in pain on the bathroom floor.

Nova is comforted by her new beau, Roy, whom she tells all about her strange affliction, before the pair begin to kiss.

While embracing, Roy begins to touch the wound and eventually puts his entire hand inside it when Nova appears to become more aroused, before the duo have sex on the bed of a motel room.

Squid Game

RATING – TV-MA

A gruesome Netflix horror series about a fictional deadly game show in which poverty-stricken characters compete Battle Royale-style to win a £27million cash prize has come under fire from viewers over its ‘unnecessary gore and violence’.

Korean-made Squid Game features grisly scenes of characters being shot in the head and organ harvesting, in the latest example of shock-tactic programming from the streaming giant.

But some TV fans have been left repulsed by the excessive violence, with several saying they could not even make it through the first episode – and others recommending it be banned for viewers under 20 because it is ‘too gory’.

In the series, the characters are trapped inside a candy-colored fortress and overseen by masks guards, also wearing pink.

Each character is in desperate need of money – one has escaped from North Korea and is trying to reunite her family – and so is willing to put her life on the line in the hope of winning the cash prize.

In each episode of Squid Game, characters take part in bloody versions of traditional children’s games, like Grandmother’s Footsteps, or British Bulldogs, with the winners progressing to the next ’round’ of the game show.

The losers are executed by a masked death squad standing by with machine guns, with one scene in a version of Grandma’s Footsteps showing a contestant covered in blood after their head is blown off.

The story centers around gambling addict Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his childhood friend Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), a disgraced banker wanted by the police.

In the final episode of Squid Game – and ’round’ of the fictional game show within the series – the main characters are pitted against each other, with Gi-hun eventually tasked with killing his closest friend in order to win the game and take home the 45.6 billion won (around £28m) cash prize.

Ginny & Georgia

RATING – TV 14

Released earlier this year, Ginny & Georgia follows 15-year-old Ginny and her 30-year-old mother Georgia as the latter tries to give her children – which also includes son Austin – a better life.

However, Ginny feels like she’s more mature than her mother as the two explore different relationships in the comedy drama.

Viewers were left gobsmacked after Ginny went from ‘never having kissed a guy’ to suddenly losing her virginity in the very first episode.

Another shocking scene saw Ginny masturbate with a toothbrush as she began to discover her sexuality.

In episode four, she sends her boyfriend, Hunter, a photograph in her lingerie.

But after he doesn’t respond, she instead sends it to her secret lover and neighbour Marcus, who she lost her virginity to.

The two of them begin to exchange flirty messages and start to both masturbate – but to the shock of fans, Ginny uses an electric toothbrush, with the bristles up.

Bridgerton

RATING – TV MA

Netflix’s Regency-era romp Bridgerton has become a hit with viewers, at least partly for its raunchy sex scenes.

In the main the series follows Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) as they enter a complicated relationship with plenty of twists – and sexual tension.

Alongside that there are the love stories of other couples, including Daphne’s brother Anthony Bridgerton, who is in love with a courtesan opera singer.

The series was praised for a larger number of its sex scenes focusing on female pleasure, while critics suggested their were too many steamy moments for a period drama.

Within the first twenty minutes of the eight hour long series, Anthony Bridgerton – brother of protagonist Daphne – romps with a beautiful opera singer Siena against a tree.

There are at least 12 different sexual acts across eight episodes – from innocent snogging to daring oral sex, with one fan-favourite moment being between Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) on the stairs.

The Duke of Hastings also performs oral sex on Daphne in the library of a country home during a sex-filled montage in episode six.

The couple also had sex in the garden, in an inn while travelling and had steamy sex in the Duke’s master bedroom.

There was also a controversial scene where Daphne refused to let the Duke pull out before climaxing, so that she could fall pregnant with his child.

So raunchy were some moments that Netflix reportedly had to fight to keep the sex scenes off porn websites, after the news distressed castmembers.

The streaming giant had thought to have been ‘working tirelessly to hunt down pirates’ who uploaded the more intimate moments from the show, reports The Sun.

At the time, it was understood that many of the scenes had already been taken down from X-rated platforms after the cast were left feeling ‘horror and anger’ at seeing them online.

The Green Inferno

RATING – R

Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno is based on a group of students who travel to South American to protest against a chemical firm.

But when their plane crashes they are kidnapped by a cannibalistic tribe, who – graphically – start eating their prisoners one by one.

Viewers were left disgusted after the college kids saw themselves picked off one by one in increasingly gory ways.

One of those who was captured was beheaded, with the leader of the tribe holding his head aloft with a scream still on his face.

His eyeballs are plucked out, his tongue cut off before he is dismembered limb by limb.

There are also a number of sexual jokes, and nudity throughout the film which saw it hit with a backlash.

Bonding

RATING – TV MA

Bonding is a Netflix original series about a woman (Tiff played by Zoe Levin) who moonlights as a dominatrix to pay her way through graduate school.

She is joined by her best friend Pete (Brendan Scannell), an aspiring comedian who falls into becoming her bodyguard and assistant.

The second series of Bonding began in early 2021, and saw Tiff being trained in BDSM and role-playing.

One of the first scenes is of a man suspended facedown from the ceiling in full-body leather.

Dominatrix Mistress Mira (Nana Mensah) stands in front of him, harshly reprimanding Tiff and Pete before turning towards the men and asking ‘Are you all right, pet?’

Other astonishing scenes show Mira interacting with a client in a sleep sack while he has an apparatus controlling his oxygen flow.

In the first season, viewers witness Tiff tying up a client and engaging in Flintstones role playing.
