Man, in his 20s, dies after being shot by armed Met police officers during chase in south London

A man has died in hospital after being shot by armed police following a pursuit which ended in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill, south London on Monday evening.

A Met statement said: ‘At 9.51pm on Monday, 5 September specialist firearms officers were in pursuit of a suspect vehicle in the Lambeth area.

‘The vehicle was stopped following tactical contact in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill. A police firearm was discharged.

Bystanders reported hearing two clear shots.

A police cordon and forensics tent could be seen at the scene on Monday evening following the incident

Streatham Hill residents claimed officers performed CPR on the suspect after shooting him.

‘I and many other neighbours heard 2 gunshots,’ one social media user posted.

‘Have also heard reports from neighbours who say they saw police stop a car and shoot a man. They then performed CPR on him before taking him away. Lots of armed police and helicopter.’

Another user added: ‘Police stopped a car and shot a man. Looked like a planned operation with a car behind and a car in front. 

The statement continued: ‘An occupant of the suspect vehicle, a man believed to be aged in his 20s, sustained a gunshot injury.

‘London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance were requested. Officers administered first aid prior to their arrival and the man was taken to hospital, where he died at 12.16am.

‘Enquiries are ongoing to notify his next of kin. Cordons and road closures are in place.

‘As is protocol, the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards were contacted and they notified the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who have launched an independent investigation.

‘Enquiries into the exact circumstances are ongoing.’

The victim of a shooting in High Street Kensington on Sunday was named as Maximillian Kusi-Owusu – he was a drill rapper known as M Lo

It comes after an aspiring drill rapper was shot and killed in High Street Kensington in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Maximillian Kusi-Owusu , 29, also known as drill rapper M Lo, was shot at around 2am on Sunday and was given first aid by officers who were called to the scene, but was pronounced dead at 5.32am.

Tributes were paid to the rapper who has been described as ‘extremely talented’ and energetic.

A man was arrested in connection with the shooting but was released on bail yesterday.
