Whole Cantaloupes, Cantaloupe Products Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced further recalls of Malichita branded whole cantaloupes and certain cantaloupe products following an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella. Several illnesses have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States and Canada.

Pacific Trellis Fruit, LLC has recalled 4,872 cases of Malichita brand whole cantaloupe. The FDA is investigating the outbreak involving Malichita brand cantaloupe for potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Pacific Trellis Fruit products were distributed between October 18 and 26 in California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Canada and sold in various retail supermarkets. The whole cantaloupe was packed in corrugated cartons with “Malichita” label.

Further, Cut Fruit Express Inc. is recalling its Fresh Cut Fruit Mix Containing Cantaloupe for the same concern. The recall involves Caribou Coffee Fruit Mix CHPG 6.5oz, and Cut Fruit Express Brand of 6.5oz, 15oz, 16oz, 32oz packages of Fruit Mix contains Cantaloupes and Food service packages of 5lb tray, 10lb bag, 25lb Pail. The affected products were shipped between October 24 through October 26

Cut Fruit Express said its recall was after its supplier issued a recall on Cantaloupes for potential contamination of Salmonella.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometime fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Meanwhile, in rare instances, infection with Salmonella can result in more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Meanwhile, both companies have not received any reports of illness related to their respective recalled products to date. Customers are urged not to consume the products and to dispose of them.

Earlier, Sofia Produce LLC, which operates under the name Trufresh, had recalled all sizes of Malichita brand fresh cantaloupes due to a possible salmonella contamination.

Following this, many companies, including those who were supplied cantaloupes by Trufresh, had called back their products. GHGA, LLC, Kwik Trip, Inc., and Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Co., among others, recently called back fresh-cut products made from whole cantaloupes.
