Victoria’s snowfields are in line for around 20 centimetres of fresh snow on Monday and hopefully more later in the week as the snow season begins to take shape.
Mount Buller reported 14 centimetres of fresh snow on Sunday morning and is likely to receive more this week, as will Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, which both recorded solid falls last week.
Mount Buller received 14 centimetres of snow on Sunday with more forecast for this week.
“The mercury has stayed well below zero all day and it’s feeling very wintry up here,” a Mount Buller spokesperson said.
“The forecast is exactly what snow lovers want to see for this time in the season.”
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said that so far this year, there had been “a pretty standard start” to the snow season, compared with the early blasts of snow in May and June last year, but more snow was on its way this week.
“We are anticipating a cold front to move across the south-east of Australia on Monday, and it’s bringing some rain and some cold air, which is a good combination for another dump of snow,” Hines said on Sunday.
“The snow levels at the moment look like it could be 600 metres to 700 metres [above sea level] across Victoria; 700 metres for the Snowy Mountains and NSW; it could be even lower than that for parts of Tasmania,” she said.
“We might see some of those Alpine areas pick up 20 centimetres of snow on Monday, a few spots a little more than that.
“Conditions should be cool for most of the week, so it doesn’t look like more snow will come through until Thursday or maybe Friday.”
Mount Buller has already received calls from interested holidaymakers ahead of the winter school holidays.
“The snowmaking team here on Mount Buller are gearing up for long hours in the coming very cold days and will be contributing man-made snow to the deliveries coming from above to get additional terrain open as soon as cover permits,” a spokesperson said.
“If the snow continues to stack up as forecast, skiers and snowboarders can look forward to more lifts rolling and increased terrain for their turns towards the weekend.
“Mount Buller is currently operating three lifts with skiing and boarding on Bourke Street and sightseeing on the Northside Express lift. The village toboggan park is also open for snow play.”
