US pilot ejects from F-16 fighter jet moments before plane crashes into Yellow Sea off South Korean coast

• A US F-16 fighter jet crashed into the Yellow Sea off of the Korean Peninsula  
• The pilot reportedly escaped the plane and was rescued

A US F-16 fighter jet pilot ejected moments before his plane crashed into the Yellow Sea off the Korean Peninsula, according to Yonhap News. 

The jet crashed into the water on Monday morning during a training flight near the US air base in Gunsan, South Korea, approximately 111 miles from Seoul. 

It has been reported the pilot has been rescued and US officials in South Korea and South Korea’s defense ministry spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. 

The name of the pilot has not been released.

The pilot’s current condition is also known. It’s not been said what cause the plane crash or why the pilot ejected.

On July 27, 1953, the Korean Armistice agreement was signed, which ended hostilities and created a Demilitarized Zone along the 38th parallel. 

Following the armistice, South Korea and the US then signed a Mutual Defense Treaty which supports the alliance between the two countries. 

There are about 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea currently.
