Jailed trans double rapist Isla Bryson is served divorce papers by estranged wife after sex attacker sparked row over SNP gender laws

The estranged wife of Isla Bryson has served the transgender double rapist with divorce papers, saying ‘I don’t need someone like him keeping me down’.

Shonna Graham, 31, spent seven years trying to find Bryson before discovering the rape charge and that her estranged partner was living as a woman.

Bryson was jailed at Edinburgh High Court for the rape of a woman in Clydebank in 2016 and a second victim in Drumchapel three years later – while still a man known as Adam Graham.

A political row subsequently erupted over whether a male or female prison would be more suitable for the convict, with the courts deciding that Bryson should be locked up with men.

Shonna has since served divorce papers to Edinburgh HMP, where Bryson, who changed gender while waiting to stand trial, is now serving eight years behind bars.

The pair met on internet dating app Badoo in 2015 and wed at Falkirk Registration Office on July 8, 2016, Shonna said. 

She went on to suffer abuse at the hands of Bryson for a year, which she claims involved the now-convicted sex attacker stabbing her in the hip while trying to rape her.

‘I don’t want to be reminded. I don’t need someone like him keeping me down. I’ve moved on,’ she told the Daily Record.

Shonna, who is now engaged to a new partner, explained that she had tried to divorce Bryson before but was unable to serve papers as she did not know where her ex was.

‘I’ve sent papers to Edinburgh HMP and I don’t have to see him. I haven’t heard back yet.’ 

Shonna previously slammed the double rapist’s eight-year sentence as ‘nowhere near enough’.

During sentencing in February, Lord Scott said Bryson ‘presents a particularly significant risk to any woman with whom you form a relationship’, and handed the rapist eight years in a men’s jail.

Bryson was initially remanded to Cornton Vale, Scotland’s only all-female prison in Stirling, but was later moved. 

Shonna told MailOnline that while she welcomed the decision to put Bryson in a men’s prison, she felt the debate overshadowed the of the sex attacker’s two victims.

‘He – and I will always call him a he – will be out of prison in four years, but his two victims will have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

‘It’s an insult to them that their whole ordeal has hardly been discussed and it’s all been about him, and what kind of prison should he go to.

‘They are the ones who are suffering and all he’s done is pull a stroke to try and get himself a softer sentence.

‘I’m glad they finally saw sense and put him in a man’s prison and I hope he has a hard time there – he deserves it after what he’s done.’

The double rapist is currently serving eight years at HMP Edinburgh, also known as Saughton Prison, which was built in 1920 and holds around 900 prisoners per day.
