Sadiq Khan issues more than £700,000 of ULEZ fines EVERY DAY
Sadiq Khan issues more than £700,000 of ULEZ fines EVERY DAY with just less than 4,000 charges on average handed out daily for three months in a row
- Figures show 3,944 fines, on average, were issued for breaking rules in June
- The figures will fuel fears that the Ulez is being used by Mr Khan as a ‘cash cow’
Sadiq Khan is issuing demands for more than £700,000 in Ulez fines every day – including for cars thought to be pollution compliant.
Latest official figures show 3,944 fines were, on average, triggered daily for breaching emissions rules in June.
With fines costing £180 if not paid within 14 days, it means Transport for London (TfL) sent out demands for £709,920 worth of fines on average each day that month, equivalent to nearly £5million a week.
For May, the average daily number of fines issued was 3,919 while it was 3,971 in April.
It means Labour’s London mayor made demands for more than £64million in fines in the second quarter of this year.
The figures will fuel fears that the Ulez – Ultra Low Emissions Zone – is being used by Mr Khan as a ‘cash cow’ to plug the financial black hole in TfL’s finances
The zone, which charges motorists £12.50 a day for driving older more polluting cars and fines them for non-compliance, was expanded last Tuesday to cover all the capital’s boroughs.

This means the number of daily fines being issued will now probably be much higher.

Yesterday it emerged that some older cars are being hit with fines despite being compliant.
The charge generally applies to pre-2005 petrol cars and pre-2015 diesel cars. However, some older than this are compliant as manufacturers made them to cleaner standards before these became mandatory.
But Ulez cameras have been failing to spot older cars that do meet its emission standards, The Sunday Times reported.
The problem is thought to be affecting models from makers including BMW, Land Rover, Mercedes and Toyota.
Experts believe as many as 100,000 petrol cars registered from 1999 to 2005 may be affected and fines could be being wrongly issued.
Their drivers are advised to get a certificate of conformity from the car’s maker giving details of its emissions.

Ulez cameras have been attacked including with paint, pictured, as the scheme’s expansion loomed. Police said 500 such crimes have been committed in the last five months.
And James Bond actress Naomie Harris, 46, who has a hybrid Range Rover, has joined criticism of the scheme, saying it hits the poor hardest.
TfL director Christina Calderato said Ulez was not ‘about making money’ and revenue will fall as drivers move to cleaner vehicles.
