Demand for ‘energy efficient’ kitchen air fryers rockets by staggering 3,000 PER CENT in a year as Britons brace for winter cost-of-living crisis

Demand for ‘energy efficient’ kitchen air fryers has rocketed by a staggering 3,000 per cent in a year as Britons brace to cope with the cost-of-living crisis this winter. 

Air fryers cook and roast food in a way similar to an oven, but are said to be more energy efficient, cheaper to run and allegedly a healthier alternative. 

The appliances have heating elements only on the top with a large fan to distribute the heat, meaning that they don’t need much time to pre-heat and the food cooks quickly and evenly.

They can be used to cook frozen or fresh food, such as meat and vegetables, taking between 10 and 20 minutes for most meals.

Demand has rocketed by 3,000 per cent since 2021 and is up 2,000 since the summer, according to price comparison website PriceRunner. 

One of the website’s most popular items, the Ninja AF400UK, has seen its popularity rise by more than 22,000 per cent since October 2021.

The fryers are becoming an increasingly popular option in the midst of soaring energy bills this winter. 

A study by Hometree in September showed that while an oven costs around 34p to run for 20 minutes (with an average wattage of 3kW), the same amount of time for an air fryer would cost 10p (1kW). 

Further research by Utilita found that air fryers run at an average cost of £55.71 a year, while an electric cooker runs at £335.57 a year.

Research has also shown that food cooked in an air fryer tends to be healthier as they just use hot air and a small amount of oil for cooking. 

In addition, some people choose air fryers for the convenience, as the cooking basket can be put in the dishwasher after it has been used. 

The popular kitchen appliance ranges in price, with cheaper versions starting at around £60 but more expensive ones can cost over £200. 

Air fryers are not the same as deep fryers, which submerge food in hot oil to give them a crispier – but fattier – result.
