A council spokesman said: ‘Our intention was to offer practical advice and suggest ways to overcome issues of frozen waste’
In the post on Facebook, the council added: ‘Our crews will do their best to empty your bin, but if they are unable to do so because it is frozen shut they will not return to empty it until the next scheduled collection day.’
It gave residents ‘useful tips’ on how to prevent bin lids freezing shut, including keeping the bin in a shed or garage.
Residents responded by posting their own irreverent ideas, with one adding: ‘Shall I put a hat and scarf on it?’
