Furious Tesco shoppers have slammed the supermarket giant for leaving them ‘hundreds of pounds out of pocket’ due to new Clubcard rules.

Previously customers have been able to swap their Tesco vouchers for up to three times their worth at more than 100 High Street brands called ‘Reward Partners’.

Alongside discounted prices, the Tesco Clubcard Reward Partner scheme also allows customers to earn points to spend on meals, travel and days out. Shoppers earn one point for every £1 spent in store or online.

But the changes, which were due to take effect from June 14, mean customers will only be able to claim two times the value of their vouchers at places including Virgin Atlantic, Disney+, Legoland and Cafe Rouge.

The supermarket chain was forced to push back the deadline for the voucher points as thousands of people trying to claim their rewards caused their systems to crash.

Angry shoppers took to Twitter to complain that they had missed out on rewards vouchers

One customer said he’d missed out on £165 of vouchers as a result of the system failure – enough to cover a family trip to Thorpe Park.

Other Tesco shoppers said online that they couldn’t claim their vouchers and demanded that the supermarket honour their points at the original value.

One shopper said: ‘Voucher system still not working.. and the extended deadline for 3x is now passing… THIS SUCKS.. Have tried 3 days in a row 🙁 Why no update on social media??’

Another complained that they had been trying ‘for five days’ to exchange for vouchers without success.

Customers can redeem their points online and Reward Partner codes are sent by email from Tesco Clubcard. If you exchange on the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app, they’ll also appear in the ‘Rewards’ section.

Other changes being brought in by Tesco include that customers will collect one point for every two litres of fuel, instead of one point for every £2 spent

Tesco confirmed that any customers who received a confirmation email before the cut off point of 11.59pm on June 15 would get vouchers worth three times their value.

Any reward vouchers ordered before the deadline will be valid for a year at the current rate, rather than the usual six months. This excludes Disney+, with whom vouchers must be redeemed before August 10 and for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members, for whom the scheme will change on July 21.

If that is not enough, Martin Lewis has revealed how to extend your usual points for even longer. The Money Saving Expert recommends making a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard Rewards website – to get remaining points credited back to your account.

Mr Lewis explained: ‘Say you’ve got a £10 voucher, go online, login, spend say 50p of your £10, so you’ve now got £1.50 in restaurant vouchers – because 50p becomes £1.50.

‘For the rest of the £9.50, they re-issue it and it lasts another two years.

‘So if you spend just a little bit of the voucher, the rest of it is re-issued and it lasts another two years.’

This latest change is another important point for Tesco customers looking to save, after April saw the supermarket move its points system from the ‘Clubcard’ app to a new ‘Grocery and Clubcard’ one.

Since 1995, Clubcards have helped Tesco shoppers to make savings as they shop. Every pound you spend equates to one Clubcard point.

When you redeem these points in the form of vouchers to spend in Tesco, they are worth one penny per point.

Those with Clubcards can also access discounts on select products in store and online, as well as exchanging points for other rewards.

Other changes being brought in by Tesco include that customers will collect one point for every two litres of fuel, instead of one point for every £2 spent.

The UK supermarket has already altered its loyalty scheme several times this year, including changing the terms of its famed meal deals.

It has moved to paperless coupons and personalised vouchers, as well as introducing warnings for customers whose points are about to expire.
