One-in-seven Britons say they’d love to travel back in time to live in ancient Rome.

A poll of 2,000 Britons found that living it up – with heated baths, mammoth banquets, daily boozing and orgies – during the Roman Empire was the place they most wanted to be.

A total of 14 per cent said they’d love to time travel back 2,000 years to experience life in Rome when it dominated the globe.

Being a cowboy in the Wild West came in second spot, followed by living in medieval Britain.

Asked to choose where they would most like to time travel to – but only in the past – Brits voted as follows;

Of the remaining 10%, time travel destinations including the start of the Cold War, Ancient Greece, during the time of the Tudors, Georgians and Stuarts.

Colin Bonner, 49, of Watford, Herts, said he’d loved to don a toga and luxuriate in Ancient Rome.

The pottery teacher said: ‘What’s not to like? Good food, good wine, heated baths, togas, and of course, the orgies, which might be fun.’

Julia Brinksworth, 29, said: ‘I’d give anything to go back to Ancient Rome and see Julius Caesar in action.

‘I’d get myself a goblet of wine and take a seat in the amphitheatre to watch the gladiators go at it, and then retire to the heated baths.’

A spokesman for Illicit Enounters – a married dating site with more than 1 million members – said Ancient Rome was the ‘top fantasy’ for Brits.

Jessica Leoni, of Illicit Encounters, said: ‘Ancient Rome was an era filled with taboo romance, lavish lifestyles, and a totally different take on love and sex.

‘It’d definitely be a saucy escape from the humdrum of today!

‘It’s not much of a surprise that Victorian Britain rated so low in the poll: it was a time all about control and decorum… there’s nothing sexy about that.’
