Man jailed for six weeks after his new pet ferret died in his car on hottest day of the year

A MAN was jailed for six weeks after his new pet ferret died in his car on the hottest day of last year.

Dean Rigley, 32, parked under a tree to give the animal shade from 30°C heat but left no food or water while he stayed with a pal.

RSPCA inspectors saw the lifeless animal in his cage the next day with blood around its nose.

The charity’s prosecutor Paul Wright told a court: “It was curled up with no water and nobody in the vehicle.”

A post-mortem revealed the creature, which sweats through its ears and feet, also had blood in his lungs.

A vet concluded it would have suffered for hours before dying last July in Rigley’s Fiesta at a car park in Holgate, Notts.

James Buckley, defending, said Rigley, of Cotgrave, only had the ferret for one day. He said: “It was largely an accident.”

Mr Buckley told Nottingham magistrates: “Everyone is aware of what happens to dogs in hot cars but as far as other animals are concerned, it is by no means obvious.”

Rigley admitted causing unnecessary suffering.
