Dates are a traditional treat at Christmas, with the edible sweet fruit often stuffed with marzipan or nuts, and many families will have already started stocking up.

Lidl is recalling its 240g packets of Deluxe Stuffed Dates, priced at £4.99 per box, with a best before date of January 21, 2022.

Lidl has recalled a batch of their festive favourite Deluxe Stuffed Dates (Batch number: 21391/196, best before 21/01/2022), after salmonella was detected in a routine product check

‘These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

‘Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

‘If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

Salmonella: What is it, and what are the symptoms?

Salmonella live in animal and human intestines and are shed through faeces

Salmonella are a group of bacteria that infect the gut.

They live in animal and human intestines and are shed through faeces.

Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food. Contamination is possible if raw and cooked foods are stored together.

Symptoms of salmonella infections include diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes vomiting and fever.

On average, it takes from 12 to 72 hours for the symptoms to develop after swallowing an infectious dose of salmonella.

They usually last for four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

But if you become seriously ill, you may need hospital care because the dehydration caused by the illness can be life-threatening.
