The Push Towards Electric Mobility: A Look at eCharge’s Products

It’s pretty obvious by now that climate change is a very real threat, and our world is in big trouble if we don’t change our ways. One of our biggest problems is the cars we drive every day. Did you know that motor vehicles collectively cause 75% of carbon monoxide pollution in the US? In 2014, air pollution was directly responsible for over half a million deaths throughout Europe—with transportation emissions being one of the biggest culprits.

One of the ways we can tackle this massive pollution issue is by switching to electric vehicles. In fact, when the electricity used to power e-vehicles comes from renewable sources, driving these cars produces zero emissions. It’s truly looking like electric mobility is the future, as more and more car manufacturers continue to launch new e-vehicles onto the market.

There is one little problem, however. At the moment, there isn’t an adequate charging station network to accommodate all these e-vehicles. Without proper infrastructure available, many people might think twice about switching to a greener, cleaner car if it means it could inconvenience them.

This is where eCharge comes in. eCharge is a German-based company aiming to build the physical infrastructure for e-vehicles to recharge all over Europe. They have created a solution where they provide hotels with e-charging stations for free—including the installation, electricity, and backend system.

Their e-charging stations and back-end system also work with a booking platform to allow e-vehicle drivers to conveniently find the nearest charging station, book it, and instantly pay for it using a credit card or certain cryptocurrencies.

Let’s delve deeper into what exactly eCharge is offering that will revolutionize the e-vehicle industry.

The e-Charging Station

First, let’s look at eCharge’s main star: their charging stations for electric vehicles. As you can see in the video above, they’ve designed a sleek product that’s customizable to fit the look of the business it will be stationed at.

Technical specifications include:

  • Charges up to 22KW AC
  • Stand or wall mount
  • 4G Modem as hotspot
  • Camera to detect vandalism of charging stations
  • Microphone, loudspeaker as Amazon Alexa for voice control
  • LED beam to differentiate between electric and combustion engines
  • RFID payment with echarge.work membership card
  • NFC for wireless payment with credit card
  • Remote management
  • Smart charger, controlled by AI engine to manage the energy flow
  • Payment with ETH, Dash, or credit card

eCharge is not only creating charging stations for electric cars, but also for electric bicycles as well! Here is a prototype of their design:

But wait! There’s more! There are also plans to create charging stations for charging up to multiple phones at once, plus a convenient charging station specifically for conference rooms.

The Booking System

eCharge’s booking system boasts many features that will streamline the process of finding, booking, and paying for hotel rooms and e-charging stations, all directly from your smartphone.

eCharge’s current main focus is the DACH region—that is, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The booking system will have an ever-growing list of all charging stations currently available in the DACH region. eCharge’s goal is to have over 1,000 on this list by the end of 2018.

For an example of how eCharge will work, let’s say a family from Hamburg, Germany wants to take a road trip to Zurich, Switzerland. That’s around a 9-hour journey, so they’ll need to stop somewhere along the way for the night to rest and charge up their beloved Tesla.

All they need to do is pull up the eCharge app, find a suitable hotel off the highway, book the room and e-charging station, and they’re all set. They can even pay in advance using a credit card, PayPal, or cryptocurrency. And since the eCharge community receives special discount rates from the hotels, the family will have a little extra cash in their wallet for their vacation.

Once they get to the hotel, they simply pull into an e-charging spot and use a QR code activation from their phone to automatically begin the charging process.

What Sets eCharge Apart From the Crowd

The real differentiator between eCharge and other companies that make e-charging products is that eCharge utilizes blockchain technology. This puts them way ahead of the curve, since their technology is more sophisticated than that of any of their competitors.

Blockchain allows eCharge to utilize smart grid technology that tracks and records each unit of energy distributed across the network in an unalterable ledger. This allows drivers to plug their cars into an eCharge charging station and sell power back to the grid—drivers can effectively make cash while they sleep! And there’s no need to worry about your car’s battery being drained when you wake up, as the smart grid knows to fill your battery back up by the morning.

eCharge also has a native cryptocurrency called eCHG for facilitating transactions on their app. Users may purchase eCHG easily with a credit card, PayPal, or other cryptocurrencies. This feature also makes eCharge unique among their competition.
