Creator of ‘Evolved Apes’ NFT Collection Disappears With 798 ETH Worth $2.7M

“Evil Ape”, the pseudonymous developer behind the non-fungible token (NFT) project “Evolved Apes” has allegedly done an exit scam.

Here is how NFT marketplace OpenSea describes Evolved Apes:

The Evolved Apes Universe is a collection of 10000 unique NFTs trapped inside a lawless land. Fighting for survival, only the strongest ape will prevail.

According to a report by Vice, just days after the project’s launch, Evil Ape disappeared (along withthe project’s Twitter account and website), and it appears that he/she ran away with 798 ETH of the project’s funds, which were the result of initial sales to the public and commissions from sales in the secondary market.

An anonymous member of the Evolved Apes community, who claims to have spent around 3 ETH on 20 Evolved Apes, told Motherboard:

What has happened is that Evil Ape has washed his hands of the project taking away the wallet with all the ETH from minting that was to be used for everything, from paying the artist, paying out cash giveaways, paying for marketing, paying for rarity tools, developing the game and everything else in between.

In his report for the community, he went on to say that he and a few other members are planning to create a new NFT project called “Fight Back Ape” that will mean Evolved Apes holders will receive “a Fight Back Apes token linked with the art from the old project.”
