Every year for Mother’s Day, I try to come up with a unique gift idea for my mom, and every year, I end up defaulting to a big bouquet of flowers or a gift card to her favorite restaurant. Don’t get me wrong, she loves both of those things, but I always wish I had come with an idea that was just a little less expected, if only for the surprise and delight factor. Mother’s Day 2021 is finally going to different, however: AncestryDNA kits are on sale, and they’ll make for a great gift for mom.

The original AncestryDNA kit is normally $99, but you can get it now for only $59. While Ancestry’s kits are typically comparable in price to other popular genetics kits on the market, this sale price is currently much lower than its competitors.
While Commerce Editor Courtney Campbell said her kit gave her mostly basic information that she could then use to start a deeper search into her roots, she found it easy to use and fun to explore. Reviewed’s executive editor of commerce, Kate Ellsworth, meanwhile, found that doing the work to build out your family tree on the site unlocked a much richer and more rewarding experience.
The process is relatively simple: Ancestry sends you the test in the mail, which consists of a saliva tube to spit into. From there, you’ll mix in an included solution and send it right back to the company in the included prepaid return package. It normally takes around two or three weeks to get your results (you’ll want to note that holidays can cause delays).

There are two additional options on sale if you want mom to be able to dive even further into her background: The AncestryDNA and family tree bundle, normally $178, is on sale for $60, and includes a three–month membership to Ancestry’s World Explorer subscription. This will give her access to family records from around the world (and normally retails for $149 for six months). There’s also the AncestryDNA Traits package, which furnishes in-depth information about how your genes can influence physical traits, such as hair thickness, sensitivity to bitterness and sweetness or what type of earlobes you have, available for $69 (usually $119).
This sale ends on Sunday, May 9—Mother’s Day!—which makes it a no-brainer for a unique, last-minute gift at a great price. After all, what more could the mother figures in your life want more for their special day than a stronger connection to family?
